Design enthusiasts who apply will be judged on the basis of creativity, feasibility, sustainability and social well-being, Airbnb said. The company said it was also looking for designs with “unusual shapes, unexpected locations, immersive concepts, (and) spaces with a story.”

The company’s competition comes amid an increase in the popularity of non-traditional rentals. Searches for unique stays, such as tiny houses, windmills and shepherds’ huts, are up nearly 70% from last year, according to Airbnb.
