The Ontario Home Builders’ Association (OHBA) welcomes

Toronto, Ontario, April 28, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today the provincial government released the 2022 Ontario Budget. Ontario building plan, the budget charts the course for increasing the supply and choice of housing in our province. Important measures are included to increase opportunities in the skilled trades, invest in critical infrastructure needed to build new homes, and ultimately make buying a home easier and faster.

“Today’s provincial budget takes important steps to help accelerate the delivery of housing supply to communities large and small across Ontario,” said OHBA President, Bob Schickedanz. “Making access to skilled trades easier, investing in transit-friendly communities, and resourcing the Ontario Land Tribunal will allow OHBA members to get keys to waiting families faster and increase the volume and variety of housing options our province needs. ”

First and foremost, OHBA is pleased to see the government commit to building 1.5 million new homes over the next ten years to address the housing crisis in our province and ensure that more ‘Ontarians can find a place to call home. The OHBA also welcomes investments in skilled trades that will help address the labor shortages that exist in Ontario and build more homes. Investments of $15.8 million for the Skills Development Fund, $114.4 million for the Skilled Trades Strategy and $15.1 million for the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program will our province to more easily develop the skilled labor we need. The new expansion of GO Transit services and commitments to transit-supportive communities across the province will help connect people and support more housing options.

“OHBA welcomes many significant budget changes and investments aimed at addressing labor shortages and streamlining the development approval process, so we can deliver keys to more families, faster” , said OHBA President Bob Schickedanz. “We look forward to future action plans on housing supply to address the recommendations of the Housing Affordability Task Force.”

Whether it’s a first-time Gen Y homebuyer, a working adult, a young family or a retiree, Ontarians need more accessible homes. Without the right mix of homeownership, including rental options, Ontario risks economic damage as opportunities, investments and businesses seek out jurisdictions with greater choice and greater housing supply. Simply put, significantly increasing the supply and variety of housing is essential for Ontario to remain Canada’s economic engine.
